Perhaps one of the best feeling associated with music is discovery. Discovering a new favorite song, artist, or just perhaps something new and exciting that you had never thought of/heard of before. Even though I’m pretty old and useless by now (almost 31 at this point), I still manage to find new things that excite me in my advanced and fragile age. The most recent thing perhaps is Upstate act, Where’s Wolf.
I first discovered the band in my spam folder, after almost a month of it’s inhabitance. After listening to the band’s 4 song demo i knew they just had “it”, whatever “it” is. After watching them perform live at The Radio Room last month, my assumptions were confirmed: this group really is a diamond in the rough.
Now that I’ve built them up so much you’re probably wondering what they sound like. If I were to draw a comparison it would probably be to Taking Back Sunday spin-off, Straylight run, but even that doesn’t sit quite right (but it’s just a general comparison). The band has highly emotional lyrics and vocal delivery without being overtly whiny (think later day Conor Oberst). I’m also a sucker for intertwined male/female vocals and the band utilizes this tool well, and often.
When you mix all of those elements together with intricate guitar and bass parts and a powerhouse drummer, you’ve got something on your hands for sure. The band is still young, and has a little refining to do, but all of the elements are there. Their great live performance, sincere songwriting and humility will see this group go a long ways if they choose to keep at it.
